The underlayment decisions
Floors need crack isolation or backer board over wood substrates; wet areas need a waterproofing membrane behind the tile — full stop. This layer is invisible in photos and decisive in ten-year outcomes: the five-figure shower repair always traces back to skipped waterproofing, never to the tile brand.
The tool calculus
A snap cutter ($50–100), notched trowels, spacers, and a grout float cover 90% of jobs — the starter kit pays for itself against one room of pro labor. Wet saws rent for ~$50/day and only earn ownership with multiple projects or heavy porcelain. Buy the starter, rent the saw, and skip nothing safety-related (knee pads count).
